The Munich Air Disaster took place in 1958 at the Munich-Riem Airport where a British European Airways flight holding 44 people crashed while trying to take off. The Manchester United team returning to England following a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade were among the passengers.
Of the 23 people who met their demise that day, 20 of them died at the scene while three more succumbed to death in the hospital. There were a number of United players among the dead.
